Day Trip - Part 1
The Renaissance Hotel is in the commercial part of the city. A older more historic part of the city is west of my location. European occupied areas of Tianjin in the 19th century and established communities reflecting there backgrounds. These "concessions" still have buildings from the period and newer ones keep the same feeling in their design.
The doorman got a taxi to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tianjin. He arranged a rate of 180 RMB for the 45 minute ride. There was more open spaces on the highway than expected. I took a photo explaining some of the history of the cathedral.
I met a young man in the church named Lao. He is a Christian and was visiting for the first time. He asked me to take his photo and then reciprocated. He continued to chat with me after we got outside. An older man joined in the conversation. He thought I was British and said my accent was not like other Americans he knew. The older man was delighted to talk with me. He encouraged me to learn Chinese.
There was a beggar woman at the gate of the church. She was very persistent.
